Dolly Beach Adventure Robinson Crusoe Style
Do you remember going camping overnight on a beach when your mattress didn’t make the grade? This was my Dolly Beach Adventure ‘Robinson Crusoe’ style.
I’ve done it now, taking the good with the bad in our beach adventure, it’s easy to forget the discomfort when the SERENITY and the sheer beauty of a place have you dissolve into calmness. The sun rose around 7 and it was light from 5 am, our rock pool still and clear with the small tropical fish enjoying the morning.
‘I don’t remember the ants being there’ he told me… despite them and the occasional nip – sleeping in the tent with the magic of natural air conditioning in the tropics was sublime! After 30 years of use, this AWESOME OzTrail tent is still doing its job although we could have done with the sand pegs to secure the sides. It faithfully provided a haven for us to escape from the Robber Crabs and most of the ants.
It’s no surprise to most that I love cooking and am always up for the challenge of cooking a good meal in a small area with limited equipment, enter the Trangia Stove I was also introduced to this amazing little cooking gem which is also over 20 years old and didn’t I think it would work but we had two meals hot and delicious and several hot drinks all made in about the same time it takes to cook in my kitchen at home, powered by methylated spirits.
Up early next morning we were back to base by 9 am, the gorgeous sunrise was a delight as you see above. We were envigorated by the 45-minute walk in from the track where we left our car.

We packed up the next morning and were back to base by 9 am as we were up early to enjoy the gorgeous sunrise you see above. Envigorated by the 45-minute walk in from the track where we left our car and our muscles feeling the walking exercise both on the track and along the best – a well-deserved rest was in order.
BEST TIME TO VISIT CHRISTMAS ISLAND
I’m a regular visitor to the island I might say a part-time resident, and whilst it’s a tropical climate it makes the beaches and jungle walks accessible. However between May and September is recommended as being ideal, it depends on the reason for your visit and there’s more on that here.
There is much to do if you like wildlife and exploring something quite different, there’s history to be explored as well, and tours are offered to guide you through. Snorkelling and diving are wonderful here, even if you’ve never done these like me before I visited – I’m hooked on snorkelling, especially from a boat.
The red crab migration the island is famous for and many a visitor is fascinated by this natural phenomenon once a year for these little guys to continue to grow their species. When I was there during this time the season was delayed and the rains were absent for a month or so longer than usual, and finally they came but the crabs came in waves instead of the usual mass – still amazing to see, certainly easier to live amongst. It is a wonderful place to visit and explore.
